Obesity Rise — Give up the Pork Pies!

Obesity on the riseA recent news item states that obesity in Britain is on an upward spiral, and with it the requests for weight loss surgery — not entirely surprising given the current climate where apparently 'easy', 'quick fix' solutions are trumpeted over long-term lifestyle changes.

New guidelines are being set suggesting that health authorities should limit offering such procedures to people with a BMI of over 60, although the actual qualification for such surgery is a BMI of 40. What this means in terms of weight is as follows…

a BMI of 40 means–
A 5ft person would be 14 st 9
A 6ft person would be 21 st

a BMI of 60 means–
A 5ft person would be 22 st
A 6ft person would be 31 st 8

The press have reported these guidelines with the main message being 'This will encourage already obese people to get even fatter because they are so desperate and can't help themselves!' This may be true, but the press should also be more responsible in promoting sustainable weight loss methods, with less emphasis on the latest faddy diet plans.

There are various government initiatives which have been introduced in recent years to combat obesity such as 'jog clubs' and 'cycle to work' schemes, but unfortunately a 'lazy' lifestyle is often more appealing. Maybe the popularity of the Nintendo Wii will turn the situation around!

The fact is, if the NHS haven't got the funds, facilities or medical staff to carry out an increasing number of such surgeries, people will have to start taking more responsibility for self-inflicted health problems. Obviously, cases should be assessed individually as to need, and reasons for such weight gain need to be taken into consideration — not just a set lower weight limit. Some people may have medical or psychological conditions which should be taken into account for example.

The surgery itself involves either the insertion of a balloon in the stomach or a band around the top of the stomach which then restricts food intake. While it is very successful, it is not entirely without risk, and the heavier the patient, the higher that risk is.

The real 'easy' solution to obesity is to look at whole lifestyle changes, and to get into good habits. Getting into a good routine everyday, such as eating a balanced diet, doing regular exercise, getting enough sleep etc is the key to a happy life and one that can keep you away from the surgeon's knife.

Great article!
I like the part about getting into a good routine. Sometimes when the goal is to lose weight, the journey can be quite discouraging. By starting with the mindset and making a goal of getting up and out every day for a walk or something that requires exertion is better than saying 'I'm going to lose … stones by …'

Hi Mckenna- Indeed! I love running and am trying to lose a stone at the moment. So rather than struggling to stick to a strict diet I just think of it as 'the more I run, the more I can eat!' which for me is a win-win situation.
Like you said, a lot of it is about setting a good routine. I'm sure most people could find some sort of physical activity that they could enjoy regularly and then they wouldn't have any weight issues.

I would be careful with that one. Its great that you love running but unless you are running for more than an hour at a time you will be in danger of eating more than you burn off. If you just go for a run around the block you may only burn say 200 calories and there is over 260 calories in a bottle of coke.

Thats true. Running is great, however you need to ensure that your calorie expenditure is higher than your intake.

In Canada we are seeing a huge increase in Type II diabetes and are now seeing a number of preventive programs for a healthy lifestyle. Keeping a healthy weight always means doing an activity that you love:-)
